An important aspect of the DGL Nunnery is our retreat centre which contains two wings for short term and long term retreats. In November the four nuns who had completed nearly four years of retreat came out to be greeted by a line of nuns proffering white scarves. Everyone was pleased to see these retreatants after such a long time and the young nuns were particularly intrigued by their long hair which remains uncut during retreat. Coincidentally the next day was the annual election of the monastic roles such as disciplinarian and store keepers which was followed by a picnic. This gave the nuns a chance to sit with their retreat sisters and catch up on the nunnery gossip! The retreat nuns then went for medical and dental check-ups prior to re-entering retreat again for a further 3 years. They are very happy to be able to undertake these extended periods of practice under the guidance of our Spiritual Director Kyabje Khamtrul Rinpoche and the senior yogi Togden Achoe and look forward to the day when they can become fully trained yoginis. |

The Pilgrimage to 'the Cave' with Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo was a unique, amazing and blessed journey for all who participated....
Thirty of us met near Dharamsala in Northern India to embark on an 18 day pilgrimage led by Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo which culminated in a climb to the cave in remote Lahaul where she spent 12 years in retreat. During the pilgrimage we visited many fascinating places and met some amazing people. |

Nuns Attend Conference in Dehradun |

 It was on 31st December 2008 that a group of five nuns from the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery accompanied by Rev. Jetsunma, went to Drikung Kagyu Nunnery near Dehradun for a workshop on 'Nuns' Confidence'. Over 40 nuns took part in this three day long workshop. |

Togden (Yogi) Comes to DGL |

Togden Drubgyu, from Khampagar Monastery at Tashi Jong, came to the Nunnery with Lama Lodoe on the 15th October. Lama Lodoe has been a great help to DGL since its inception, assisting with ritual matters concerning the consecration of buildings, design of shrines, and much else. Togden Drubgyu is one of three 'new' Togdens who have completed their long and arduous training and who now 'come out' from time to time to assist in pujas and other ceremonial occasions. He and Lama Lodoe consecrated the ritual vases and other sacred materials which were then placed by the nuns inside the Shrine of the Study Centre Puja Hall. |

H.E. Dorzong Rinpoche Consecrates New DGL Study Centre |

 His Eminence Dorzong Rinpoche visited us in October to perform the inauguration of the new DGL Study Centre which includes classrooms, a library, visitors’ room, teachers’ room, yoga room and puja hall. Dorzong Rinpoche and the nuns chanted many prayers of auspiciousness during the afternoon and the nuns’ voices rang throughout the building. Dorzong Rinpoche then gave an inspiring talk and blessing. The nuns are very excited to be now using the Study Centre and it is particularly pleasing to see them at afternoon debating practice on the covered verandah outside the library.

The Nunnery was delighted to receive another 14 young postulants in September 2008. These girls are from Tibet and the Himalayan regions of India. Some of the girls arrived already ordained, and the others received their primary ordination from His Eminence Khamtrul Rinpoche at Tashi Jong on Sunday 26th October. The night before ordination the new lay girls had their heads shaved. Amidst much laughter and teasing the older nuns wielded razors with careful skill and the new girls submitted gracefully! A team of talented young Bhutanese artisans are at DGL creating the clay statues for the Study and Retreat Centre Shrine rooms. When they have finished these they will move on to creating the larger statues which will be made 'in situ' in the traditional Tibetan temple currently being built. |

DGL Nuns Enter Long Retreat |

 Five DGL nuns enter a long strict retreat. The nuns received their empowerments for the retreat from H.E. Khamtrul Rinpoche and detailed instruction from Togden Achoe. These nuns are the first to undertake long retreat in the newly completed DGL Retreat Centre. |

 This commemorates the day on which the Buddha descended from heaven after teaching Dharma to his mother. At DGL Nunnery there were days of preparation for the evening puja to the Buddha and sixteen Arhats. |

Venerable Tenzin Palmo in Tibet |

 In July 2007 Tenzin Palmo flew to East Tibet or Kham with her long-time Dharma sister Ani Jinba who is fluent in the Khampa dialect. They visited various nunneries and monasteries in search of nuns accomplished in the yogic practices of the Drukpa tradition. They stayed for several days at Gebchag Gonpa which is a Nunnery of 400 nuns. This Gonpa is well-known for nuns practicing and sleeping in wooden meditation boxes. The nuns are also accomplished in tumo (inner heat practice) and Tenzin Palmo was impressed with their dedication. |

from 'Gentle Voice' November 2007, Siddharta's Intent, Melbourne  On 18-20 July 2007 in the pleasant German town of Hamburg was held the 1st International Congress on Buddhist Women's Role in the Sangha. This was a conference specifically to discuss the ways of bestowing the bhikshuni or higher ordination for nuns in the Tibetan tradition. Vinaya experts from around the Buddhist world came together to offer the fruits of their considerable research into this issue. So there was a contagious atmosphere of expectancy and enthusiasm.

 On the 10th of June 2007, H.E. 9th Khamtrul Rinpoche Shedrup Nyima and several monks from Tashi Jong came to conduct the puja with the nuns for the foundations of the new DGL Temple. This particular puja will remove obstacles for the Temple now under construction. This will be the heart of the Nunnery. |

Getsulma Ordination at DGL |

 In April 2007 His Eminence Dorzong Rinpoche came to DGL Nunnery to bestow the Getsulma (novice) ordination on the eligible DGL nuns. After learning about the commitments and responsibilities, the second year nuns may elect to take this level of ordination. After much reflection, all these nuns chose to make this life-long commitment to higher training. |

Building and Completion of DGL Stupa |

 March 2007 saw the completion of the beautiful Nunnery Stupa which contains a stunning image of the female deity Ushnisha Vijaya. This stupa is modelled on the one at Tashi Jong commemorating the 8th Khamtrul Rinpoche. The Nunnery Spiritual Director, the present Khamtrul Shedrup Nyima, came to consecrate the Stupa. It was a joyous occasion for Tenzin Palmo and the nuns. |

H.H. 17th Gyalwang Karmapa's teachings Tilokpur |

 During Tibetan New Year in February all of the nuns, several staff members, and Khenpo Tsering spent several days at the Tilokpur Nunnery receiving teachings from His Holiness the 17th Karmapa on the Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva. |

Senior Nuns Pilgrimage to Buddhist Holy Places, India and Nepal |

 To celebrate the completion of their initial six year study programme, the senior DGL nuns left in November 2006 for a one month pilgrimage to the sacred Buddhist sites of India such as Bodh Gaya and Sarnath, and to Lumbini in Nepal. They were very excited about this opportunity to make merit and offer prayers for the world. For many it was the first time on a train! |
